Abstract. We describe ZEUS-2D: a two-dimensional Eulerian finite difference code for solving the equations of astrophysical fluid dynamics including the effects of magnetic fields, radiation transport, self-gravity, and rotation. The finite difference equations are written in covariant form on an arbitrary moving orthogonal grid which enables the accurate simulation of different flow geometries under translations and changes of scale. In this paper, the magnetohydrodynamic algorithms are presented and we describe how to use the code. The radiation hydrodynamic algorithms are presented in a companion paper by Stone. We describe the application of ZEUS-2D to the evolution of a supernova remnant in a strong magnetic field to illustrate several of its features.
